Tea Ceremony III - Japan, circa 1885

Though filled with subtlety and nuance, the basics of the 1000 year-old Japanese tea ceremony are relatively simple. Guests compliment the host on the Kekemono (scroll painting) and observe the simple flower arrangement and display of tea utensils. The host then offers sweets with the phrase, 'Okashi wo douzo otorimawashi kudasai.' Tea is served and each guest personally thanks the host as their cup is being filled. In this image, attributed to Adolfo Farsari, the first course of an optional meal (hashiarai) is being served to humble guests. Image Size     24 X 32 cm
